The history of Metallica

Metallica was formed in the beginning of the 80’s in los angeles when drummer Lars Ulrich placed a advertisement in a newspaper called ‘’the recycler’’. Guitarist James Hetfield react to it, he said that he can sing and play the rythem guitar. When James and Lars Meet each other for the first time, James was not very impressed by Lars his drum work, but after a lot of thinking he said Yes to Lars.

James and Lars where looking for a bandname. They asked much people. But no one knew a nice name. A friend of Lars whas starting a band arround the same time as Lars. But he had much names on a piece of paper, When Lars looked at the paper he read ‘’Metallica’’ So he took the name Metallica for his own band. He had the name a little bit ‘’stolen’’. The friend of lars never was angry of it.

Later They found a bass player called Cliffort lee Burton, Known as Cliff Burton, Cliff burton is a verry good bass player, and in my opinion the best one metallica ever had. And a little later they found dave mustaine. that whas in 1982.
Dave Mustaine was not very long in Metallica, in 1983 he was kicked out Metallica because of Alcohol Problems.

When Mustain was kicked out, He start a new band called Megadeth. Kirk hammet took over his place as lead guitarist. Before Mustaine kicked out, Metallica had already some wroted songs, where Mustaine played in. So in some older albums the name Dave mustaine’s name appears in the booklets of the CD’s and LP’s. Because he wrote some of the riffs.

The band is completed! So they start to record there first CD in 1983, They called it ‘’Kill Em All’’. And 1 Year and 2 days after Kill Em all They released they’re second album ‘’Ride the lightning’’.

In the Ride the lightnig tour, there was someting terrible happened with metallica, the tourbus was crashed and the Bass player Cliff died. It whas a poor time for the Metallica- guys. But a good bass player appeard called Jason Newsted. Metallica goes on for a long time, they wrote much albums and everything was right. Till Jason newsted kicked out the band. After then, Metallica was going backwards, They lose much fans and the albums resived bad comments. They had a deal with Ozzy Osbourne, Ozzy’s Bass player Robert Trujillo for Jason newsted. So Ozzy goes on with Jason and Robert goes on with Metallica.

On this page im gonna talk about the material they have made, i hope you enjoy it.

Lets start with there first album: ''Kill Em All'', released in 1983. It is a Thrash metal, And in my opinion, one of the best albums they have wrote, and the best if you look at the guitar, bass and drum work. In some songs plays Dave Mustaine the guitar, and not kirk, That is because kirk wasn’t in Metallica when they record the songs. See It like 25% Dave Mustain on the solo guitar and 75% Kirk on the solo guitar.

Then we get the second Album, Released in 1984. Its Called ‘’Ride The Lightning’’ Its A little bit like Kill Em All. Also in this Album There are some Songs wrote by dave mustaine, with the same reason as with Kill Em All. The songs most on Ride The Lightning are about the death, and other things like that.

The Third Album is called ‘’Master Of Puppets’’. Released in 1984. This Album is to Remember Cliff, Because he wrote much of the Master of puppets songs when they where on there Ride The Lightning tour.
In My opinion This is The best Album From Metallica. It is fast, heavy, and badass. I have this album, and i’ve listen this album very much
The lyricses are about diffrent things.

After A long Master Of Puppets tour. They Released a new fourth Album in 1986. Its Called ‘’…And Justice for all’’. Its the first ProgMetal Album ever wrote. ProgMetal is a Metal style with long songs, and rare Drumtrack and GuitarTracks. Its the best sold Metallica album.

The 5th album from Metallica is Called ‘’Metallica’’. But everyone calls it ‘’The Black Album’’. It is released in 1991. Much Metallica fans where disappointed, because the black album was a much softer album than te early 4 albums. In my opinion The black album has some good songs, okay they are soft, but in this album you can hear emotions of the band, sometimes sad, sometimes a little evil, Sometimes happy.

The Tradition to add a instrumental was broken with this album, My Friend Of Misery was ment to be instrumental, but Lars ulrich wasn’t right with this. He wrote a lyrics for it, and with lyrics it is on the cd.

After the black album. Metallica lost his power. They cut there hair off and they wrote worser music.
They Released in 1996 Load. In my opinion it was not a good album. The Metallica style changed to more slow stuff, slower than The Black Album. Much fans were more disappointed than with the black album. The songs on it are:

After Load. Metallica was like, we are losing our power. So they Released some not- Released work on a new album. The album is called ‘’Reload’’.
Reload is beter than Load. Let that be clear. But not the same good as Master Of Puppets or one of that Metal Classics. The album Cover looks like the Load album. But A little bit diffrent.

The spirit of Metallica is still not death. That proved Metallica with there 2 next albums. Garage Inc, wich is a cover album. and S&M wich is a live album in coopertation with The San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. The Albums are Released in 1998 and 1999. There are much songs on Garage Inc. All coversongs. some of them are

• Whiskey in the jar by The Dubliners

The Song ‘’Mercyful fate’’ on the album is a Medley by the band Mercyful fate, with the songs, Satan’s Fall, Curse of the pharoahs, Into the coven and Evil in it. it is a very good medly.

But Then… after 4 years they release a new album. St. Anger. For much fans a nadir of the Metallica History. But in my eye’s. A very good album! A diffrent style of metallica. But I like it. A strange thing is that lars his snare drum has no snare’s. Because Lars liked that for the songs.

The album St Anger is about Angery feelings Metallica had in that time. Drugs problems and Alcohol problems followd them everyday. So they wrote a album about it.

Now, we have the last album. And one of the best! The album ’’Death Magnetic’’, Released in 2009. With this album. The metallica power is 100% back! Alright, James voice is not like the first albums. But like very man does, he gets old. But the guitar work is like the first albums. Fast solo’s and nice riffs.

An other cool fact about Death Magnetic is that the song All Nightmare long in 2009 had a place in the Dutch Top 40. For Metalheads in The Netherlands it was a bit revolution. Metallica was back!

After death Magnetic in 2009 there are 2 live Albums and Dvd’s Released. One recorded in Nimes and one recorded in Mexico City. Both nice performances. Strong and powerfull.
And a Guitar hero game of Metallica is released in 2009. ’’Guitar hero Metallica’’. Much big hits are on it.

Bandmembers

On this page, I am gonna tell you more about the bandmembers of Metallica. Metallica has 4 current bandmembers, and 2 former. And I gonna tell something about some guest artist for Metallica.

Lets start with James hetfield.
He is 49 years old and spent his
childhood in downey in californië.
Before Metallica, James played in
more bands, one of them is called phantom lord.
One fact about James is that he was nearly
death on stage! In 1992 he stand on a pyrotechnic and
so he burned. But he surived it!

Then we got the co- founder of Metallica.
Called Lars Ulrich .He is 49 years old and
spent his childhood in denmark. But later he
moved to Californië, where he met Hetfield.
Lars is married 2 times, they are both done.
He has 2 children and he loves them very
much he always say. On the left side, you have a
picture of lars in the And Justice For All tour,
on the Right side a picture from him in the Death Magnetic tour



Then we get a guitar god, better
known as Kirk Hammett. His age is 50.
He can play the guitar like a pro.
He spent his childhood in San fransisco. A cool
fact is that he had his guitarlessons by the
world famous Joe Satriani, Known as the lead guitarist on
songs as ''Surfing with the alien'' and ''Satch boogie''.
Kirk has one son and is married 2 times.

At last, we get the "Bass Monkey" Robert Trujillo.
He is 48 years old and spent his childhood in californië.
In the beginning of his career. he start bass playing
with some solo projects, like ozzy osbourne.
Robert get some welcome money from metallica,
one million dollars, Robert didn’t say no to it ofcourse.
I only have a picture from the Death Magnetic Tour, as you
can see, he is a real monkey.


Then we get the 2 former bandmembers.
We start with cliff burton. He is born in californië.
He was the first bass player for Metallica, and the best.
But he died on 24 year of age by a bus accident.
He is a very fast bass player and he does everything
with his fingers, and for people who don’t know anything
about bass playing. That is realy fast. I only have a picture
when he is in metallica, not from his childhood ore something.


Then we get Jason Newsted, he is 49 years old
and is born in Michigan. He is a very good bass
player and has wrote much Metallica songs.
But he never was realy friends with the other bandmembers.
Its not they hate eachother but they wern’t good friends.
In 2002 he left Metallica for an own solo project
and ozzy osbourne’s band. Jason was also a very good singer,
he did much backing vocals for metallica.
On the left side you see a picture of Jason when he was
in Metallica. In the Middle a picture of Jason these days and
on the right just a cool action- picture.


There are 2 more people i wanna talk about. Joey jordinson and dave lombrado.
Both they are drummers. They are invaders for Lars as lars can’t play a gig.

The masked Joey jordinson is 38 years old
 and is drummer of the band slipknot.
He always wears a mask in slipknot
(everyone in slipknot does), so he does it in
Metallica too. Joey is a very fast
drummer. and maybe better than lars himself.

The other one is dave lombrado. He is born in 1965 and he is the drummer of the band slayer. he is very fast and an awesome drummer. He is very straigt. Just very good!

Now im gonna talk about the greatest hits from Metallica.

Metallica had very much hits. Hits who get in the biggest hit lists of the world.

From every album Im gonna talk about one or two greatest hits.

From kill em all the greatest hits are ''Seek and destroy'' and ''Wiplash''. They play that 2 songs on every gig. Seek and distroy are very straight songs. Seek and destroy is a calm song in comparison with the other Metallica songs. Seek and destroy is about fighting, i think if i read the lyrics about something like airforce.

Wiplash is very fast. A realy straight riff and an very fast solo. The song is about pain from a wip, so as the title say.

From the Ride the lightning album i think For ''Whom The Bell Tolls'' is the greatest hit. Its a very easy song, easyer than the other Metallica songs, but is is very good. Its about the bells from the churge, if you hear them, you know that it is too late…

The greatest hit on the album Master of puppets is the song ‘’Master of puppets’’. Its a very difficult song about slavery. The song said ‘’Come crawling faster, obey your master. So listen to your master. The master who pull the strings of the puppet.

The greatest hit on and justice for all, and the greatest hits of all the Metallica songs is ‘’One’’. Its a very, very, very difficult song about getting mad. someone who is wound in war and lays in a hospital. Its a very nice song to listen and to play on the guitar. But it is very difficult.

From the black album, the greatest hits are ''Nothing else Matters'' and ''Enter Sandman''. Nothing else matters is an very difficult finger tapping song. the theme of the song is missing someone. Hetfield wrote this for his wife, he missed her so much that he wrote a song about it.

Enter Sandman is the other very famous song. Its about ‘’the sandman’’ A bedtime story who everyone know. Its very cool to play to play on guitar and it isn’t very difficult.

 

On Load and Reload the greatest hit is ''Fuel''. Its a very cool song about racing and being fast. Gimme fuel! Gimme fire! Gimme that wich i desire! Its very nice to sing when no body is at home. Just scream to it!

From St. Anger, there isn’t realy a greatest hit. But The best song of the album is the song ''St. Anger''. Its about being jailed, So the Videoclip is.

And from the album Death magnetic, the 2 greatest hits are ''The day that never comes'' and ''All nightmare long''. The song The day that never comes is about war. it a little bit is in the same style as one. The clip is about someone who works for a army, but he don’t want to kill people.

All Nightmare long is about. Nightmares, so as the title says. It is a little bit like someone who said something to someone to dream about it. ‘’I take you down without mercy, Im gonna take you down all nightmare long. The song says.

Gear

 Metallica's Gear

On this page, im gonna tell you more about Metallica’s Instruments and amplifiers. Its a realy difficult topic if you don’t know anything about Instruments. But I try to explain it easy. Im not gonna tel you everything, because it gets too much when i do that.

 

Start with James hetfield.

First i gonna talk about some of his guitars.

His most famous guitar is the ‘’Iron Cross’’ james got it with the brand ESP and Gibson, The difference between these 2 is that he use the ESP for more heavy work and the Gibson for more slow work. You find the Iron Cross on the right.

Another very famous guitar is the snakebyte. Its an ESP guitar. He use this guitar in the Death Magnetic tour for the And justice for all songs. You see the snakebyte under the iron cross

For all the guitars, he use ErnieBall strings.

James has much amplifiers. He Uses mainly Marshall Amps on stage, All with a Metallica monster or logo on it, and at home and when he is just playing for fun, he uses Krank Amplifiers.

Lars Ulrich had more Drum kits. Nearly every tour he has another. He uses Tama drumkits the most. In contrast to other bands. He Nearly never has The band logo on the bass drum. Just the logo of the brand of the drumkit.

I do not gonna explain all the drumkits. But im gonna talk a little bit about the And justice for all drumkit. Its the most beautiful drumkit Lars ever had in my opinion. Its a Tama Granstar II. The Tama Granstar is a black and white drumkit. The Cymballs he used are all from zildjian, its a very Famous Cymball and highhead brand.

Kirk has some very nice lead guitar gear.

Kirk’s guitars are very famous and are worth much money. Kirk has an own guitar brand, in collaboration with ESP. mo

Lets start with the ESP KH 2 ‘’OUIJA’’.It whas his first released guitar from his brand.

He uses this guitar nearly every concert.

The other guitar Im gonna explain more is the Kirk Hammett LTD KH-603

Its a Les Paul guitar with a little zombie head on it.

Kirk mostly uses Randall Amps on stage, and sometimes Marshall. I love Kirk’s sounds because of the amps, guitars and the effectpedals he uses. His Distortion pedal (A pedal to get a heavy sound) is the Boss Metalzone, its a very nice pedal for thrashMetal.

Robert trujillo’s bass gear is very easy.

He uses mostly a yahama 5 string bass guitar, and a Zon Guitars Bass guitar with 5 strings.

He always play with 5 strings, because he had his first bass lessons on a 5 string bass. The most bass guitars has 4 strings.

This is one of his yahama bassguitars, he got much more bassguitars, but no famous one.

Something cool about Roberts gear is that he always uses the same brand of Amps. He always uses a ampeg bass amp. Another cool thing is that he use sometimes a octave pedal, to get a very low sound. And a bass guitar with 5 strings is always very low.

I also gonna tell a little bit about the former bandmembers Gear.

So Cliff Burton had only 3 bass guitars.

Alembic Spoiler bass, black (It was a stolen Bassguitar)
Aria Pro II SB-1000 and SB Black 'n Gold I
Cliff mostly used Ampag Amps, as well as robert.

Jason Newsted had much more Bass guitars, but not a realy famous one or something. He mostly used ESP bass guitar, and the 3 old Cliff basses.

He used ampeg amplifiers.

In contrast to Robert, Jason and Cliff Always used 4 string basses.
